Highland Arans
A SHORT HISTORY:
First recorded patterns in Scotland in the early 800's A.D. STITCHWORK: once concluded, an Aran can contain nearly 100,000 stitches. PROPERTIES: An Aran sweater can absorb 30% of its weight in water before feeling wet. The natural wool fibre is breathable, drawing water vapour away from the skin and releasing it into the air, thus helping the body to maintain an ideal temperature. STITCH COMBINATIONS: Many of the stitches used, are reflective of Celtic Art. PATTERN SIGNIFICANCE: Most all the patterns are surrounded by historical myths and legends: CABLE stitch, represents the fisherman's ropes and his wishes for a fruitful day at sea. DIAMOND stitch, represents Success & Wealth if the diamond is also filled-in with a pattern of Irish moss stitch; if left empty, it represents Poverty. (Undoubtedly, we at "Reekies" make sure our Diamonds are full of Moss stitch!). HONEYCOMB stitch, depicts hard work and the fruit and satisfaction this yields. TRELLIS stitch, is said to depict the stone walled fields of North Western communities. In store in Grasmere, we have a unique pattern, seldom seen but equally popular: the "TEAR-DROP" pattern.
