The M1 Garand replaced the bolt-action M1903 Springfield as the standard service rifle of the United States Armed Forces. It was itself replaced by the M14 in the late 1950's. However, M1 was continued to be used in large numbers until 1963, seeing plenty action in World War II, the Korean War, and, to a limited extent, the Vietnam War.
