About Us

Thistle of the Lakes� originated as a small family-run business founded by Christopher Reekie, a hand-loom weaver born in Selkirk, Scotland and who moved to Grasmere in 1950. Chris's two sons, Malcolm and Wallis, were both taught how to weave when they left school, and wife Mary was a trained darner and mender. The business grew steadily for the following 57 years with the whole operation, from the raw wool to the finished woven produce, carried out by the family.

Today, upon the retirement of both Wallis and Malcolm, Thistle of the Lakes was purchased privately - the owner being of British/Russian descent - with a business philosophy of continuing the tradition of fine quality merchandising and Customer service. After a successful first month of operation, they were able to expand the business by acquiring the adjoining property and founding Reekies "Thistle, largely devoted to Outdoor apparel, hand-made Crafts and Kids and Ladies knitwear.

Thistle of the Lakes strides on and has been visited by thousands of tourists over the years we hope you will be one of them soon!
